Escaping The Darkness: Finding Light
Mar 24, 2025Reflection on Surah An-Noor
Life can sometimes feel like a vast, overwhelming ocean of darkness—layers of confusion, doubt, and sin piling up until we can no longer see the way forward.
This is the imagery Allah uses in Surah An-noor (Q24:40): "Like layers of darkness within a vast sea, covered by waves, above which are more waves, above which are clouds—layers of darkness, one upon another." It’s a powerful metaphor for spiritual blindness, a state where the heart feels heavy and distant from Allah.
But here is the beautiful truth: no matter how deep the darkness, Allah’s light is always within reach. The Qur’an reminds us: "Allah is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into the light." Surah Al-Baqarah (Q2:257). Let’s explore how we can escape spiritual darkness and return to His radiant guidance.
What Causes Spiritual Darkness?
Spiritual darkness doesn’t happen overnight. It creeps in through:
-
Persistent Sinning: Sins act like veils, covering the heart and blocking Allah’s light.
-
Neglecting Worship: Abandoning Salah, Qur’an, and Dhikr weakens our connection to Allah.
-
Bad Company: Friends who normalise sin or distract us from faith can pull us deeper into darkness.
-
Doubt and Ignorance: Lack of knowledge about Islam leaves us vulnerable to confusion and misguidance.
-
Worldly Attachments: Prioritising material pursuits over spiritual growth leads to emptiness.
How to Escape the Darkness: Qur’anic and Practical Solutions
1. Turn to Allah in Repentance (Tawbah)
The first step is to seek Allah’s forgiveness. The Qur’an assures us: "O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow." Surah At-Tahrim (Q66:8).
Think of the man who killed 99 people, yet Allah accepted his sincere repentance when he sought guidance. (Sahih al-Bukhari). No matter how far we’ve strayed, Allah’s mercy is greater.
2. Strengthen Your Connection with Allah
Establish regular Salah, engage in Dhikr, and make Dua. The Qur’an says, "Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." Surah Ar-Ra'd (Q13:28).
Start your day with Fajr and spend a few minutes reciting Qur’an. Even a few verses can bring immense light into your life.
3. Seek Knowledge and Reflect on the Qur’an
Ignorance is a major cause of spiritual darkness. The Qur’an is a source of guidance: "This is a Book which We have sent down to you, full of blessings, that they may reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding may be reminded." Surah Sad (Q38:29).
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) spent hours in the cave of Hira seeking truth. His quest for knowledge led to the revelation of the Qur’an, a beacon of light for humanity.
4. Choose Righteous Companions
The people we surround ourselves with have a profound impact on our faith. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "A person is upon the religion of their close friend, so let one of you look at whom they befriend." (Sunan Abi Dawud). Seek out friends who remind you of Allah, encourage good deeds, and support you in times of difficulty.
5. Engage in Acts of Kindness and Charity
Helping others and giving charity purify the heart and bring light into our lives. The Qur’an says: "The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed that grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies for whom He wills." Surah Al-Baqarah (Q2:261).
During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), a woman once gave a single date in charity, thinking it was insignificant. The Prophet (ﷺ) praised her, saying: "Even a date given in charity can save you from the fire." (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). This story reminds us that no act of charity is too small in the sight of Allah. It’s not about the amount but the sincerity behind the act. Whether it’s a kind word, a smile, or a small donation, every good deed done for Allah’s sake carries immense weight and can illuminate our path out of darkness.
6. Make Dua for Guidance
When you feel lost, turn to Allah. The Qur’an assures: "And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me." Surah Al-Baqarah (Q2:186).
Du'a for Light: "O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my tongue, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light behind me, and light before me." (Sahih al-Bukhari).
The Mercy of Allah is Always Near
Even in the toughest moments, remember that Allah’s mercy is closer than you think. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Allah says, ‘I am as My servant thinks of Me.’" (Sahih al-Bukhari). If you believe in His mercy and seek Him sincerely, He will guide you.
Spiritual darkness is not a life sentence. Through sincere repentance, consistent worship, seeking knowledge, and surrounding yourself with light, you can escape the layers of darkness and reconnect with Allah’s guidance. As the Qur’an beautifully reminds us: "Allah is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into the light." Surah Al-Baqarah (Q2:257).
Let’s strive to be among those who seek Allah's light and inspire others to do the same. May this message inspire you to take steps towards Allah’s light. Remember, no matter how dark it seems, Allah’s mercy is always near.
