The journey of memorising the Qur’an is a sacred and deeply personal one. While it is filled with spiritual rewards, it can also come with challenges. Whether you are just starting out or have been on the path for a while, here are essential tips, principles and reminders to help you stay grounded and motivated.

1. Sincerity (Ikhlās)

Your intention is your foundation, so begin with a heart that seeks only the pleasure of Allah. Approach your Hifdh-l-Qur'an with sincerity and longing to connect to His words and know that Hifdh is not a competition—it is a means of drawing closer to the Qur’an and ultimately, to your Lord. So, Show Allah your humility and sincerity.

2. Desire and Determination

You must truly want to memorise. No one else can drive this desire nor force you to memorise. Make du’a, especially in sujood, asking Allah to instil the love for the Qur’an in your heart and assist you in committing it to memory.

3. Prioritise the Qur’an

Hifdh not as a task, it is a life project. It deserves the best part of your day and the most focused version of yourself.  Let the Qur'an time be at centre of your schedule and shape your routine, rather than being squeezed into 'spare time'.

4. Self-Accountability

Hold yourself responsible. Track your revision, review consistently, and do not shy away from your struggles nor allow them to define you or your commitment . Acknowledge your setbacks and strive to bounce back with determination.

5. Accountability Buddies

Memorising alone can be tough. Pair up with someone on a similar journey—review together, share your wins, and support each other through the lows.

The example of a good companion is like the seller of musk… either you will benefit from his perfume, buy from him, or at least enjoy his good scent. A bad companion is like the blacksmith — either he will burn your clothes, or you will come away with a bad smell.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)

The company that you keep matters. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us that even passive exposure to righteous people improves us. Choose companions who uplift and inspire you.

6. Understand Your Memory

Every brain works differently. Some require more repetition; others benefit from visual cues. It is not about having a weak memory—only a lazy or an untrained one. Train your mind consistently.

7. Shift Your Mindset

Memorisation of the Qur'an is not tied to your IQ, academic background or excellence. It is about love, commitment, and persistence. Even if it takes longer than others, every step is rewarded.

8. Repetition is Key

Repeat, repeat and repeat. There is no shortcut—repetition is your closest friend in this journey. Recite the ayāt over and over. Do not move on until they feel like second nature, both on your tongue and in your heart.

9. Give the Qur’an Your Time

We give time to what we love - work, family, entertainment and so on. Now, give the Qur'an its due time. Be intentional, even 5minutes a day can strengthen your relationship with the Book of Allah.

10. The Qur’an Brings Ease

Barakah (blessing) flows into your life, tasks feel lighter, and your heart becomes calmer when you fulfil your duties with the Qur'an. Trust Allah’s promise:

“We have certainly made the Qur’an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” (Surah Al-Qamar 54:17)

11. Avoid Being Overwhelmed

Don’t get discouraged by the length of a surah or a juz’. Take it step by step—one ayah, one page. Every grand journey begins with a single step. Bismillah!

12. Patience and Prayer

Hifdh is a journey that requires sabr. You will have great days and tough ones, but consistency and patience will carry you through. Seek strength through Salah and du’a. Make tahajjud your intimate time with Allah—pour out your heart and beg Him for the gift of Qur'an, retention, ease, and love for His Book. Recite what you have memorised in your Salah to anchor it deeply in your soul.

“And seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:45)
